DEVELOPING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE SELF-IMPROVEMENT PLAN Katie Webber

OBJECTIVE: To develop self-esteem by choosing a personal trait and making a plan to improve that trait.

Ben Franklin wrote in his Autobiography about a self-improvement plan he devised. His ambition was to wipe out all his faults and arrive at perfection. To do this he made a book in which he isted the 13 virtues he thought desireable. His idea was to obtain good habits by concentrating on one virtue every week. Reflecting on the success of his self-improvement plan, Franklin wrote, "But on the whole, though I never arrived at the perfection I had been so ambitious of obtaining, but fell short of it, yet I was, by the endeavor a better and a happier man than I otherwise should have been, i I had not attempted it..."
For this activity, you will do something similar to what Ben Franklin attempted. Choose one trait, such as dependability, friendliness, or honesty, that you wish to improve. Then answer the questions and follow the directions below.

MAKE A PLAN

1. Which personal trait do you wish to improve?

___honesty_________________________________________________________________________________________

2. Why did you choose this trait over the other personal traits?

______Because sometimes I don't say how I really feel, which makes it not honest. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. What do you plan to do to improve this trait?

When someone asks me something I'll be honest and tell them the way I really feel.

CHECK YOUR PROGRESS
For a week, track your progress in breaking bad habits connected with the personal trait you chose to improve. Use the scale below to check your progress each day of the week.

How satisfied were you with each day's progress? (Circle one)

In the space below, write a paragraph in which you tell what you learned about yourself from your week of trying to improve your personal trait. Will you need to spend more time trying to correct bad habits?
